5 Things You Need to Know About Cyber Security
Knowledge is power, so with that in mind we want to help you gain some very important knowledge on Cyber Security.
There are five things that you need to know:
What is Cyber Security?
“Cyber Security is the practice of ensuring the integrity, confidentiality and availability(ICA)of information online. It represents the ability to defend against and recover from accidents like hard drive failures or power outages, and from attacks by adversaries.” * Adversaries could be anyone/anything from script kiddies(ahacker that uses existing scripts or codes) to hackers(theone’s who create their own scripts and codes) and criminal groups that can crumble any enterprise.
Why is Cyber Security Important?
Cyber Security is important, not just the run of the mill important, but CLASSIFIED level important. It isn’t just about businesses and governments, it is personal. Anything that you use to connect online(phone, tablet, computer) contains information that hackers and other criminals can use to steal your identity, steal your money, etc.
Do Cyber Attacks Really Happen?
Cyber Attacks happen everyday, and most people don’t even notice. We’re not being paranoid, we’re being realistic. Think about how easy it is to access information online, now think about what it would look like if you didn’t protect that information…it would be a 24/7, all you can eat information buffet.
The most recent cyber attack happened to just about everyone that is on Facebook(https://gofm.co/2yhfmrZ).50 million accounts were affected when“hackersexploited a vulnerability in Facebook’s code that allowed them to steal Facebook access tokens - the things that let its users stay logged on indefinitely - via the“ViewAs” feature, which allows users to see what their profile looks like to other users.”*
How Are You Vulnerable to a Cyber Attack?
Overshare: Social Media is great but maybe cut back on sharing all those funny cat and dog videos.
Weak Passwords: DO NOT use any personal information as your password. Also, don’t use the same password for everything.
Trust: Please know that you probably didn’t get an authentic email from someone in Nigeria wanting to send you money. Those emails are scams and spam, if you click on it you’ll probably get a virus on your computer that will allow people to have easier access to your personal or business information.
Consider Facebook Messages to fall under email security. A great example of this is a message just about everyone got within the past week:“Hi…Iactually got another friend request from you which I ignored so you may want to check your account. Hold your finger on the message until the forward button appears…then hit forward and all the people you want to forward too…I had to do the people individually. PLEASE DO NOT ACCEPT A NEW friendship FROM ME AT THIS TIME.”
How Can You Protect Yourself from Cyber Attacks?
Update Everything: staying up to date on the latest software available for your devices is crucial in your Cyber Security.
Learn Common Scams: Remember knowledge is power, and anyone who really needs your financial help won’t be sending you an email or a message on your social media accounts.
Teach: Once you learn about something being a scam or a spam email, pass that information along. You would be SHOCKED at how many people fall victim to these simple scams.
Passwords: This is the easiest way for someone to steal your information, so choose a strong and secure password. Don’t use ANY of your personal information as a password, and if you have to write it down then put it in a secure place(asafe would be smart).
We understand that all of this information can be a lot to take in, so if you or your business needs any help then we are here to provide any assistance needed.
